CFRD Fact #3

In 2003, 16.9% of Cystics > 13 years old in the US have CFRD requiring insulin therapy.
Assuming a population of 21,742 Cystics (in 2003) seen at CF care centers in the US, this equals approximately 3,675 patients.

After compiling several days worth of CFRD facts, I decided I am not going to post one every single day. Honestly, I find it too depressing. They are important facts, but I will sprinkle them throughout time rather than dumping them all at once.

CFRD patients, as compared to Cystics without diabetes, are more likely to be underweight and to have severe pulmonary disease.

Todays fact:
There are approximately 22,000 Cystics in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry.
Using this registry it has been found that there is a 6-fold mortality rate in CFRD patients compared to Cystics without diabetes.
