CFRD Fact #8

Interesting tidbits about CFRD:
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is rare. (I would love some more info on this).
Pancreatic insufficiency associated with CFRD.
A1c levels may underestimate abnormal glucose metabolism. (would love more info on this too). So far I have only found that there is an increased red cell turnover, causing a “diluted” A1c [...]

CFRD Fact #7

Autoimmune induced insulin deficiency is the cause of type 1 diabetes.
Insulin deficiency in CFRD is due to scarring and destruction of the pancreatic islet cells and their beta cells (the insulin producers).

CFRD is not associated with the autoimmune process and the autoantibodies seen in Type 1 diabetes
Scarring (fibrosis) occurs due to thickened mucus [...]

CFRD Fact #6

Not Type 1 or Type 2
CFRD is most like type 2 diabetes, BUT requires insulin treatment like type 1 diabetes rather than diet and oral therapy like type 2.
Reasoning:

Caloric intake needs to be maintained to meet metabolic demands of CF
Oral medications used in type 2 diabetes can not be used in CF

Major side effects may [...]

CFRD Fact #5

CFRD is the most common co-morbid complication of Cystic Fibrosis patients.
The prevalence of CFRD increases with age

14% of CF patients > 13 years old
25% of CF patients 35-44 years old
approximately 43% of Cystics > 30 years old

CFRD Fact #4

Factors unique to Cystic Fibrosis:

Under nutrition
Chronic inflamation with intermittent acute infection
Glucagon* deficiency
Altered gut nutrient absorption and transit time
Liver disease
Increased energy expenditure
Thin, low lipid levels, normal blood pressure

What does this mean?
Under nutrition – Under nutrition makes it more important for Cystics to get all the nutrition their bodies need to survive. This [...]

CFRD Fact #3

In 2003, 16.9% of Cystics > 13 years old in the US have CFRD requiring insulin therapy.
Assuming a population of 21,742 Cystics (in 2003) seen at CF care centers in the US, this equals approximately 3,675 patients.

Too sad…

After compiling several days worth of CFRD facts, I decided I am not going to post one every single day. Honestly, I find it too depressing. They are important facts, but I will sprinkle them throughout time rather than dumping them all at once.

CFRD Fact #2

CFRD patients, as compared to Cystics without diabetes, are more likely to be underweight and to have severe pulmonary disease.

CFRD Fact #1

I am going to start posting a few facts a day about CFRD. Keep checking back for more info!
Todays fact:
There are approximately 22,000 Cystics in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry.
Using this registry it has been found that there is a 6-fold mortality rate in CFRD patients compared to Cystics without diabetes.
